On 21 July; for nursing homes there is still a general restraining order; until 31 August. However; in order to counteract negative effects such as anxiety; loneliness and social isolation; the person in charge of operations can grant an exemption from the ban if a person has antibodies. Ban has been extended to 30 September.

On March 6 Iceland’s Chief Epidemiologist and the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police’s Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Managemen declared the highest alert level - an emergency phase- as a result of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 disease. This was done in accordance with the Pandemic National Response Plan. On 25 May Iceland has lowered its COVID-19 alert level from ‘emergency’ to ‘danger’.

On March 6th guidelines were published to ban on visitations to residents and patients in nursing homes; long-term care facilities and hospitals. From May 4th the ban on visits to nursing homes and long-term care facilities will start to be lifted gradually; but there will remain restrictions with regard to the number of visitors at each time.
